Stockholm has often been referred to as the Venice of the north, which might be an exaggeration, but Stockholm in summer is an incredibly beautiful city, built on fourteen islands and the perfect destination for any extended cruise or yachting vacation. Stockholm with its more than 750 years of tradition as a stop-over for mariners has got a lot to offer visitors, and we at Intermarine have an excellent knowledge of the city and it’s surroundings and can help you get the most out of your stay.

The archipelago east of Stockholm consists of some 24,000 islands, islets and skerries and covers an approximate area of some 6,000 sq kilometers, or 2,300 sq miles. Most of the islands are uninhabited and provide a truly serene and peaceful setting. You may freely cast anchor in most coves and go ashore with few exceptions. The Swedish so called "right of public access" extends to all nationals and visitors alike. You may want to read more about the conditions here.

Stockholm is a popular destination for yachtsmen, irrespective of yacht size as well as for cruise ships, why it is important to make bookings as far in advance as is possible to secure the best berths. Stockholm is also rather unique in that that most of the berths are situated in the heart of the city, which makes it very convenient.

The approach to Stockholm takes about four to five hours depending on the vessel through the archipelago. Approaching Stockholm through the archipelago at dawn and leaving at dusk is a truly breathtaking experience and something that you should try planning for.

On your approach to Stockholm you pass through three main areas, the outer, the middle and the inner archipelagoes. In the outer archipelago you will sail through an area characterized by low rocky skerries, hardly any or very little and low growing vegetation. In this part of the archipelago the wild life is abundant with many different sea birds and quite often you will se the seals basking in the sun on the many small skerries.

As you approach the middle archipelago you notice a distinct change in the characteristics of the islands and islets in that they are higher and often forested. You will also notice larger, protected bays, ideal for sheltered anchoring, swimming and fishing. There is no permit required for fishing with rods.

As you move through middle archipelago and your final approach to Stockholm, you pass the area called the inner archipelago, with an even higher topography, mixed vegetation and large trees, consisting of both fur and leaved trees, like oak, birch and beech, and also quite a number of inhabited islands with houses and small cottages, as well as many small farms.

There is no pilot requirement for yachts below 70 meters (230 feet), however, vessels above 50 meters (164’) are required to report to the Port Captain’s office before beginning your approach to Stockholm.

The minimum depth in the fairway is 8 meters and there is no tide to consider, neither any strong currents. The "average" daily temperature in Stockholm during the summer is 17ºC/63ºF, but day temperatures  often go beyond 25ºC/77ºF.

See you here!
